Serving the Community: The Many Faces of Castlemilk West Church

As well as two services on a Sunday, the church ran many other organisations from the very early years including:

  • Sunday School
  • Girls Brigade (Girls’ Guildry as it was then)
  • Boys Brigade
  • Lifeboys
  • Women’s Guild
  • Men’s Association
  • Young Wives’ Group

Alongside the minister and assistant minister, Castlemilk West Church benefitted from the work of a series of Deaconesses. The Deaconesses were heavily involved in working with individuals and groups at a grassroots level and ensuring the church served the needs of the local community.

A New Home, A Timeless Mission: The Formation of Castlemilk Parish Church

Castlemilk West Parish Church united with Castlemilk East Parish Church (which used to stand at 40 Barlia Terrace) in 2012 to form Castlemilk Parish Church.

The united church met on this site until the opening of the new, modern, accessible building at 1 Dougrie Place in 2015.

The combined strength of the united church is symbolised in the communion table, font and cross which are crafted from wood taken from the pews of both the old East and West churches, bound together with oak.

So, although the old West Church building has now gone, the church carries on its long history of “serving God at the heart of the community” from its new building.
